Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2014 is Purple! (Well, actually, it’s Radiant Orchid) Our two newest purples are Amethyst and Lilac!
Amethyst
Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz found all over the world.
The name comes from ancient Greek and means “not intoxicated“. The ancient Greeks wore amethyst amulets and carved drinking vessels from stones, believing the stone had the power to prevent drunkenness!
Medieval Europeans believed amethyst had healing properties and kept soldiers cool-headed and quick-witted in battle. Amethyst was once considered equal in value to ruby, sapphire and emerald and can be found in many royal crown jewel collections.
Amethyst is the traditional birthstone for February and the the zodiac stone for Pisces. It’s also Kathleen’s birthstone.
Our Amethyst is a rich purple, not too dark and not too light. It’s available in all our yarn bases.
Lilac
Syringa vulgaris, or lilac, is a species of flowering plant in the olive family.
Native to the Balkan peninsula, it was introduced to North America in the 18th century. It’s the state flower of New Hampshire, and was chosen because it symbolizes the hardy character of Granite State residents!
We love lilacs! They are a sure sign that early summer has arrived, especially here in Minnesota where winter drags on and on and on and on (you get the idea).
Our Lilac is a lovely medium purple and is available, always, in all our yarn bases.
